Ruggero Leoncavallo, Mameli, music score, manuscript, 1916. Genoa, Mazzini Institute - Museum of the Risorgimento
The passionate figure of Goffredo Mameli attracted the post-unification melodrama, already in the mythicisation phase of the Risorgimento, and he did so in the heart of the Great War: in 1916 Ruggero Leoncavallo drew two acts on the poet from Genoa, a love story intertwined with events of the Risorgimento, and donated the music score to the Municipality of Genoa, without asking for compensation and donating the manuscript to the Museum of Risorgimento in Genoa. The first performance was also attended by an exceptional critic, Eugenio Montale, who, however, did not like the opera very much.
